About
Your data, your rights, your mountain.
Email is the key to your digital life — password resets, receipts, conversations, contracts. It should not be read, profiled, or sold. fjell.email is our answer: email that works for the person using it, and no one else.
Why we're building this
For decades the deal with “free” email has been the same: you get an inbox, and in return your messages become raw material — scanned, profiled, monetised. We think that trade is broken. Privacy should be the default, not a premium add-on or a setting buried three menus deep.
So we started over. Encryption that a normal person can actually turn on. Storage that is unreadable without your key. Open protocols instead of lock-in. And a business model that is refreshingly old-fashioned: you pay us, we run your email, that's the whole relationship.
The right laws, in the right place
fjell.email is incorporated in Norway, inside the EEA and fully covered by the GDPR. Norway consistently ranks among the world's top countries for press freedom, rule of law, and privacy. Where your data lives, and which laws protect it, is not a detail — it is the foundation. We chose ours deliberately.
How Easy Encryption works
Strong encryption has a reputation for being fiddly. It doesn't have to be. Turning it on is one step, and here is what actually happens underneath — no jargon required to use it, but nothing hidden either.
- 1You pick a password. We stretch it into a strong key using Argon2id, a deliberately slow, memory-hard function that makes guessing impractical. This never leaves your device.
- 2We generate your keys. Your password unlocks a private key that encrypts and decrypts your mail with AES-256-GCM. Because it's derived from a secret only you hold, we can't reconstruct it.
- 3You get a recovery phrase. A BIP39 phrase is your safety net — write it down and you can restore access on a new device. It's the one thing we can't recover for you, by design.
Prefer to run your own OpenPGP keys? Advanced mode hands you full control. Either way, messages between fjell.email users are encrypted before they leave your device.
What we stand for
- Privacy by default. Not a toggle, not a tier. The private path is the normal path.
- No tracking, no ads, ever. We don't profile you and we don't sell data. You are the customer, never the product.
- Open, not locked in. Built on JMAP, IMAP, CalDAV, OpenPGP. Your mail is yours to take with you, always.
- Honest. We tell you plainly what encryption can and can't protect, and we let you choose how much to use — it's optional, and recommended.
- Independent. Answerable to the people who use fjell.email, not to advertisers or data brokers.
What we'll never do
Values are easy to write and hard to keep. So here are the specific promises we're holding ourselves to — the lines we won't cross, stated plainly enough that you can hold us to them.
- Never read your mail. Not for features, not for ads, not for “improving the product.”
- Never sell or share your data. There is no data-broker line item in our business — you pay for the service, and that's the entire transaction.
- Never show you an ad or build an advertising profile from what you do.
- Never lock you in. Open standards mean your mail is always exportable and portable.
