Yes. Messages between fjell.email users are encrypted on your device before they are sent, so we never see the contents — and neither can anyone who compromised our servers. Your whole mailbox is also encrypted at rest with AES-256.

Email to and from the outside world still travels over the standard, encrypted-in-transit channels every provider uses; end-to-end applies to fjell-to-fjell mail and to our one-time secure send.

No. Our Easy Encryption sets everything up for you in one step — it generates and protects your key, and gives you a recovery phrase to back it up. If you already use PGP, you can import your own keys instead and keep full control.

When you enable encryption you get a recovery phrase. Keep it somewhere safe (a password manager, or on paper). It lets you restore access to your encrypted key on a new device.

Because your key is protected by a secret only you hold, we cannot read your encrypted mail for you — that is the point. The recovery phrase is your safety net, so don't lose it.

Yes. You can import directly from Gmail, Outlook, or any IMAP provider, or upload a .mbox / .eml export. Your folders and messages come across intact, so switching doesn't mean starting from zero.

fjell.email is incorporated in Norway, inside the EEA, and fully covered by the GDPR — some of the strongest privacy protections in the world. Your stored mail is encrypted at rest, and end-to-end encrypted content is unreadable to us by design.

Never. We don't profile you, we don't sell data, and we don't show ads. You pay for the service, so you are the customer — not the product being sold.

No — it's optional, and recommended. Your mailbox is always encrypted at rest on our servers and in transit, so your data is secure whether or not you turn on user-key (Easy or Advanced) encryption.

Leaving user-key encryption off means your mail works smoothly across the widest range of standard email clients; turning it on adds end-to-end protection that only you can unlock. We recommend enabling it, but the choice is yours.

Yes. fjell.email is built on open standards — JMAP and IMAP for mail, CalDAV/CardDAV for calendar and contacts — so it works with standard clients like Thunderbird and Apple Mail as well as our own webmail and native mobile apps.

One caveat worth being honest about: end-to-end encryption relies on our client doing the encrypting and decrypting. A generic IMAP client will handle your mail perfectly, but it won't perform the Easy Encryption step for you — for that, use our apps or webmail. (Your mail is still encrypted at rest and in transit either way.)

Yes, with one-time secure send. You protect the message with a password (shared with the recipient however you like), it's encrypted in your browser, and they open it via a link. The plaintext never reaches us, and the message expires.

We admire the others in this space — end-to-end encrypted email is better for everyone the more providers offer it. Where we differ is our commitment to open standards: fjell.email speaks JMAP and IMAP, so you can use any standard mail client and take your mail with you if you ever leave. No proprietary bridge required.

Let's be precise, because this is where a lot of marketing gets fuzzy. The contents of your fjell-to-fjell mail are end-to-end encrypted, and your whole mailbox is encrypted at rest. But email as a protocol still carries envelope metadata — who a message is to and from, and when — and any message crossing to or from the outside world is handled by mail servers that need those headers to route it.

So we protect what can genuinely be protected and we don't pretend to hide what the open email network fundamentally exposes. We also minimise what we log, and we don't build advertising or profiling on top of any of it.

Incoming mail passes through standard sender-authentication checks (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and spam filtering before it reaches your inbox, so obvious junk and spoofed senders are caught. Filtering runs on unencrypted incoming mail from the outside world; your end-to-end encrypted fjell-to-fjell messages stay private and don't need it.

Custom domain support is on the roadmap. We want to get the core encrypted mail experience right first, so we're not going to promise exact timing before launch. If bringing your own domain is important to you, join the waitlist and let us know — it helps us prioritise.

Your mail stays yours. Because we're built on open standards, you can export or migrate everything out over IMAP, or download a .mbox / .eml archive, before an account winds down. We'll give you clear notice and a grace period rather than deleting anything out from under you — the exact terms will be spelled out plainly at launch. Holding your data hostage is not our business model.

We keep the minimum needed to run a reliable, abuse-resistant service, and we don't build profiles or advertising on top of it. As a company incorporated in Norway we operate under Norwegian and EEA law, which means we respond only to valid, lawful legal process — not informal requests.

The strongest protection, though, is mathematical: your end-to-end encrypted content and encrypted-at-rest mailbox are unreadable to us by design. We can't hand over what we can't decrypt.
